The “Dirty Dozen”- first of all, what does this mean? These are the top 12 (although I'm including 15) produce items that contain the most pesticides. You should try to always buy these organic when possible.
*13. I suggest always buying corn organic- watch Secret Ingredients for why. :)
The “Clean Fourteen”- these are the top 14 produce items that you can get away with not purchasing organic.
3. Sweet peas (frozen)
Now, if possible, I would recommend buying everything organic, but at least here is a list of less pesticide’y produce items.
Hope this helps! I've attached a card to take with you to the grocery store in case you forget!
So you have your tasty organic drink of choice, now it’s time to examine your home. Eek! This can be overwhelming, so I encourage you to:
Ok, back to step one!
I would suggest starting in your bathroom.
PS...In case you’re wondering where to look or what is recommended, I will have a list of suggested products, stores, and resources for organic products in upcoming blogs soon! Feel free to comment on the types of items you want suggestions on.
Next, I would move to your cleaning supplies.
Ok, it’s time for food! I would do this at a time when your groceries are running low so you don’t feel bad about all the food that is currently in your home.
That’s a great start and may take you a while. Feel free to let me know how it’s going, ask questions and offer tips!
In 2016, the Huffington Post reported that “the average woman puts 515 synthetic chemicals on her body every day without knowing it.” What the?!
The Washington Post has an article from 2018 that discusses that truth of what’s in our American food regarding pesticides and harmful chemicals. And as someone that has terrible reactions to most chemical-filled foods, I’ve spent a lot of time looking into this one.
There’s also a great documentary about NON GMO and Organic Foods called Secret Ingredients, available to rent/buy on Amazon.
The information is out there. In fact, we hear news reports on a daily basis now of how plastics have invaded the most remote pristine areas of our Earth. Animals are dying due to our plastic pollution, cancer is rising due to Roundup poisoning our foods… I just read yesterday that a dead bird had 36 pesticides in its nest. This can all be very overwhelming.
I find myself staring at the newspaper (my newly preferred news source) asking myself, but what can I DO about it?! How do I keep my baby, my family, my dogs, my self safe from all this? I also tend to go to extremes- That’s it! I’m cleaning out anything non-organic in my home! But don’t worry, You don’t have to be as extreme as me! But I’m happy to help if you want to start fresh with healthier products in your home. And if this is overwhelming and you’d like to tiptoe into the Organic world, this is also for you! I’m here to offer tips: natural deodorants, cleaning products, makeup, food tips, shopping suggestions, recipes and more! And I love your suggestions- if you know of organic recipes, products, tips...let’s all share!
As a mom, dog owner, wife, and young woman, finding a sustainable way to live organically is extremely important to me. These times can be anxiety filled and frustrating. Our food industry is not on our side, in fact many other countries have restrictions and regulations to protect the food their citizens eat, but that is not the case here. And it’s cheaper and easier to buy the home products that are filled with who knows what harmful chemicals. So we have to work a little bit harder and spend a little bit more, but it’s worth it! You and your family are worth it!
I hope you find that together we can navigate through this mess and find a cleaner way to live organically. Whether it’s just switching to a natural deodorant (that actually works) and to organic apples for now or it’s a whole home organic makeover, every bit helps!
Here’s to clean living and protecting our families! Now grab yourself a glass of organic wine and let’s take a look at what’s in your home!
